| Guests: Eric Sapp, Melvin Goodman |
| Topics: Arms Trade Treaty / Sequestration Happens |
|
Tonight's discussion focuses on the Global Arms Trade Treaty that is being negotiated at the UN right now. There are more international laws governing the sale of bananas and iPods than grenade launchers and AK47s. Our representatives continue to resist including strict control on transfer of large shipments of ammunition. We are, by far, the largest purveyors of weapons to the rest of the world. Corporate governance through Congressional political disfunction and dependence upon a few corporate and super rich individuals for their political careers, are at the center of our foreign policy and military procurement. Eric Sapp brings the perspective of a career focusing on the intersection of faith and politics. He has served as staff member in the House of Representatives, has been a consultant in many recent Senate campaigns and state campaigns for governor, and is the co-founder of the Eleison Group. He holds a Master of Divinity and a Master of Public Policy from Duke University. Melvin Goodman is Senior Fellow for the Center of International Policy, served for 20 years as senior Soviet analyst for the CIA, adviser to the State Department on arms reduction negotiations, and is adjunct professor at John Hopkins University. He has authored several seminal books on national security. His newest book is NATIONAL INSECURITY: THE THREAT OF MILITARISM. |
