Ballads & Banjos/The Gumbo Shop
A Tribute to Maris Hearn 6/13/37 - 3/8/07
The following is a portion of a remembrance by Christine Ahern, WJFF Station
Manager and long time friend Lisa Dunn which will appear in the upcoming
Singout!
Judith DeMaris (Maris) Hearn, Folk DJ, Peace Activist, Lesbian, Feminist,
athlete and avid bicyclist, died on March 8th, International Women’s Day,
after an almost 20 year battle with cancer. Maris had a long running show,
The Gumbo Shop, on WJFF, hydro-powered community radio in the Catskills.
Maris’ knowledge of music was vast, and her music collection enviable.
In 2005 Maris was selected to participate in an innovative program at
Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital to help terminally ill patients with
cancer “sustain hope and meaning as they approach the end of their lives.”
Maris was part of a workshop where participants were encouraged and coached
in a process of looking at their lives as “legacies” and read and take
inspiration and ideas from the works of psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor
Viktor Frankel. If they were to pass on this legacy, what would it be? While
most of the group wrote their story, it is revealing that Maris chose to
tell hers in song. Her legacy project resulted in a 6 CD compilation of
songs; She named them: My Life: Childhood, Family, Me; Lesbianism, Love,
Earth/Water; My Country/My World; Activism; Peace, War, Home, Hope; and
Cancer, Time, Death, Still Here

A Tribute to Maris Hearn 6/13/37 - 3/8/07
This program marked the conclusion of a day of events dedicated to
remembering and celebrating our friend Maris Hearn. Many of Maris' friends
and family gathered in the morning to remember Maris and spread her ashes at
her beloved home in Forestburgh, New York. We gathered in the afternoon at
the Forestburgh Playhouse Tavern for the First Annual Maris Hearn Memorial
Concert where we were treated to an inspiring performance by Emma's
Revolution. "Loving Spirits Will Live Forever", we love you Maris.
