Subject: Woodstock and WJFF's Folk Plus playlist August 14 98 To: FOLKDJ-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU X-PMFLAGS: 34078848 0 WJFF is hydro-powered Public Radio. Listeners range from the top of NYC to North East New Jersey and Pennsylvania, to the Hudson River towns and throughout the Upper Delaware Valley. Some are NYC residents with a weekend home in the Catskills. The 69 Woodstock site is only a few miles from WJFF. Every year no one can stop thousands from coming to the fields, no matter the current owner, to camp and sing. Each year bumper stickers and T shirts and newspapers advertise the failure of the non event. "Only Sullivan County could blow Woodstock 97", or "Woodstock 96 the non-event of 10,000" In prior years Melanie, Arlo, or Richie Havens would show up for whomever happened to be there. Many lawsuits are still pending regarding former years. This year, local millionaire Alan Gerry purchased the land and set up food, toilets, tents, 80 ft stage, and did the needed planning and preparation that was needed to pull of an organized 3 day event. We had dj's call in with updates and crowd reaction for the whole day. Fans came for Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks and Don Henly and a group from Ireland travelled especially to see Donovan. Audience members parked at the Monticello raceway and were bused to the site. Locals were given passes to get to and from their homes on route 17, to avoid the road becoming a parking lot as in 1969. The 2 lane highway had been widened in anticipation of traffic. Because of the 4 hour special on Woodstock coverage, I did a shortened FOLK PLUS. I covered performers not necessarily at Woodstock, but active in the folk scene. As I began collecting at 6 am for this idea, I realized I could do 4 hours myself. Here is what I ended up putting in my limited hour. I used Judy Collins' Anthology notes almost as narrator since they presented a flowing retrospective. ************************************************** Folk Plus August 14 '98 In 1965 Judy Collins convinced Leonard Cohen (who did not consider himself to be a performer) to sing at a benefit for WBAI. He began "Suzanne" but walked off the stage unable to finish singing. Judy walked him back and sang it with him. 1. JUDY COLLINS - Suzanne - Forever - Elektra Ent. Collins was very friendly with Dick Farina and his wife Mimi Farina (younger sister of Joan Baez). Dick died tragically in '65 in a motorcycle accident. Even though the following song was written by Mimi for JANIS JOPLIN it is even more poignant considering Mimi's loss. 2. MIMI FARINA/TOM JANS - Quiet in the Morning Take Heart - A and M Records Joan's husband David Harris was is jail as a conscientious objector. 3. JOAN BAEZ - Sweet Sir Gallahad One Day At a Time - Vanguard LP At 3am one morning in 1967 Joni Mitchell sang "Both Sides Now" for Judy Collins over the phone. She was happy to have anyone record it as without a label herself and it became a top 10 hit. When Joni recently made her album of "hits" and "misses", she deems the cut below as a "miss". (?) 4. JONI MITCHELL - A case of You Misses - Reprise After the 60's "Hair" had been on Broadway. Mini skirts were in. Martin Luther King was gone. Kennedy was gone, And the war went on. 5. HOLLY NEAR - Better Days Hang in There - Redwood Records Anti-war sentiment was everywhere. 6. SMOTHERS BROTHERS - Morons Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour - Rubicon River Records 7. ARLO GUTHRIE - I aint a Marchin' Anymore The Songs of Phil Ochs - Sliced Bread Records (Arlo came to one of the non-events to hang out a few years ago) 8. IAN and SYLVIA - (Lightfoot's) In the Early Morning Rain Ian and Sylvia's Greatest Hits - Vanguard The first recording of this hit by Kris Kristopherson. 9. GORDON LIGHTFOOT - Me and Bobby McGee If You Could Read My Mind - Reprise Records When Elliott Charles Adropoz sang for Woodie Guthrie, Guthrie said that Ramblin Jack sounded more like himself than he did. In a letter from Johnny Cash in '65, Cash said that his record company wanted Ramblin' Jack and wouldn't stop talking about him in Nashville. 10 RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOTT - Folsom Prison Blues Friends of Mine - Hightone Records Last month I heard Tom Paxton speak about meeting Midge in the village in the 60's and how he constantly draws creativity love and support from his life-long partner. At the Swannanoa gathering we sang to Midge a new song "heres to you ramblin' girl". 11 TOM PAXTON - Ramblin' Boy The Compleat Tom Paxton Recorded Live - Elektra 12 SIMON AND GARFUNKEL - America Bookends - Columbia Records 13. PETER PAUL and MARY - Blowin' in the Wind In the Wind - Warner Brothers ******************************************* Onto live coverage at the WOODSTOCK 98 Site ******************************************* Angela Page Host of "Folk Plus" on Public Radio WJFF 90.5 fm Saturdays 11 - 1pm, following Car Talk Hydro-powered, Volunteer run, Public Radio P.O.Box 797 Jeffersonville, New York 12748 914 482-4141 folkdj@catskill.net I prefer mailings to where I do the listening: 45 Dwyer Ave Liberty, New York 12754
