Listeners range from the top of NYC to North East New Jersey and Pennsylvania, to the Hudson River towns and throughout the Delaware Valley. Some are NYC residents with a weekend home in the Catskills. This week focused on The People's Music Network which met last Saturday June 6th, 98 in High Falls New York. This group of roughly 2,000 is actually a blending of The People's Music Network, and Singers of Freedom and Struggle which combined about 25 yrs ago. Their winter gathering this year will be in Chicago. I interviewed Lori Gross who ran the summer gathering for five years, and had singer Hillary Kay in the studio, live. Last year, the gathering honored Sis Cunningham (who ran Broadside) and this year, they honored Paul Robeson. 1. Hillary Kay - Round and Round and Round Live An autobiographical piece of loosing parents and adjustments. Kaygue@compuserve.com 2. The Weavers - Lonesome Traveller 1955 Carnegie Hall LP 3. Holly Near - No More Genocide (In My Name) LP - Hang in There I played this remembering Holly's answer to a journalist who asked why she had left these political songs to sing love songs for women. Her answer was that she had sung love songs to the Vietnamese people and now she writes political songs about woman's issues, which include love. All songs are political... 6. Hillary Kay - I choose Live A possitive role model song for teen girls. A song that says that we chose what we are. We talked about how a lot of music that we gather is on cassette. I gathered many unairable gems on my tape recorder as I walked around the People's Music Network Gathering. A song about a turtle from a 6 year old boy. An 8 line song about how lonely learning can be for a smart child. Hillary said that many of her influences are from well loved cassettes: 7. Dorothy Scott - I am Learning "Hardest thing I'll ever do is say goodbye to you" 8. Charlie King "The War Has Been Coming Home." Inside Out - POBox 6207 Hamden CT 06517 Charlie focuses on the song, not the singer. Honored this year at the May 30th 98 dinner for the war resisters league, he promotes singing everywhere to better life. "How can we say yes to the Gulf war and no to the war in our streets?" And, from a working cassette of Hillary's, we played a sing along that she performed at the PMN gathering: 9. Hillary Kay - "Open up the Hydrants" An upbeat reggae tune and chorous with contrasting verses of abuse and violence. 10.
