The Diggers was the name given
to a group of English protestant agrarians lead by Gerrard Winstanley.
When Winstanley and 14 others published a pamphlet
and started to cultivate common land, they became known as "Diggers" by
both opponents and supporters. They believed in a an ecological
interrelationship between humans and nature, and began gardening
in any lands that were declared 'common'. But in 1649 there was a
nasty incident.
