Two weeks ago I began this Canadian journey, acknowledging their
Thanksgiving. I didn't come in last week, there was some painting going
on that I had a bad reaction to and gave it a rest, thanks so much to
Maureen Neville for taking my spot, shes makes it like I wasnt' even
gone with her choices and knowledge. We were so fortunate to have her
club in our area over a decade ago bringing great contemporary folk to
our area. Shes been a major fund raiser and community advocate these
decades that the radio station has been alive.
So with the break of a week, I am continuing with the Canadians Part
Two, but will be unable to play them all of course. Since I was last
here the Canadian folk awards were announced, and will be held
Nov
21st in Ottawa. I have a few of these nominations.
The history of Thanksgiving in Canada goes back to an explorer, Martin
Frobisher, who had been trying to find a northern passage to the
Pacific Ocean. Frobisher's Thanksgiving was not for harvest but
homecoming. He had safely returned from a search for the Northwest
Passage, avoiding the later fate of Henry Hudson and Sir John Franklin.
In the year 1578, he held a formal ceremony, in what is now the
province of Newfoundland and Labrador, to give thanks for surviving the
long journey. The feast was one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations
by Europeans in North America. Frobisher was later knighted and had an
inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in northern Canada named after him —
Frobisher Bay.
