01 / 07/ 2006: Mining and other Work
Mining has been in the news and the dangerous nature of the work: methane gas, coal dust, carbon dioxide, complete darkness, dynamiting underground, heavy weight of land above, water and leaking...makes for a comroderie akin to that of soldiers where you look out for the other guy in such conditions.  Folk Plus today explores mining, and other areas of work.

The US have added 100,000 synthetic compaunds into the environment. In 2007 we may hear more aboutchemical tresspass. Inuit tribes are now launching charges of human rights violations against polluting chemical compainies for loss of villages, food and ways of life.
The EPA has actually OKed the use of testing pesticide exposure on even children, if parents ok it. Barbara Boxer blocked that for only 6 motnhs. Even now pulling pesticide use is faught, but easier to catch on in Europe.
Rachel Carson was disturbed by the profligate use of synthetic chemicals and tried to  warn us in her book Silent Spring, her inconvenient truth back in 1962.

07/ 1/ 2006: Floods and contemporary folk We had extreme flooding, as did people from Virginia to Vermont. A 117-mile stretch of the New York Thruway between Schenectady and Syracuse was closed. Amtrak service in much of the western part of New York remained shut down. Along the Delaware, officials closed 10 bridges connecting New Jersey and Pennsylvania because of high water.  Travelling north on Route 17 from Liberty was shut down for days.  The Delaware River crested Thursday night at Trenton at 25.1 feet 5 feet above flood stage &  The Susquehanna River crested at just over 34 feet at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. actaully below expectations. New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York are all seeking federal funds. Our own hydro-power was turned off as the turbines became submerged by the rising waters. Our dam overan the spill, and brought with it the dirt from the house side of lake Jefferson. The Gref home just below the falls, was surrounded by water and the downspout to the turbines was exposed as the earth around it was totally washed away by the power of the water overrunning the spill. Jeffersonville town was evacuated until state agencies could ok the dam's structure. There are photos at our website of the dam damage. http://wjffradio.org/gallery/Flood-June-2006
Extreme thoughts of love and support went out to the family of the Livingston Manor teen Jamie Bertholf who was washed away from her own home's front steps as the waters broke apart her home and washed it away.  We felt a bit of comradery with Tsunami victims, with those in New Orleans.

Thanks to all well wishers with my curret battle with neurotoxic poisoning and chemical sensitivities    (http://pagewebberink.com/~angie/)
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
We should no longer accept the counsel of those who tell us that we must fill our world with poisonous chemicals, we should look around and see what other course is open to us."  Rachel Carson
