The
WJFF film series is showiing two films this evening:
Toxins
& Consumerism
Blue Vinyl - www.bluevinyl.org/
-The production of vinyl, polyvinyl chloride or PVC, begins a Toxic life
cylce
Dioxin can be carried long distances
by the wind and deposited on surface waters, soils and plants where it
moves up the food chain,
accumulating at higher and higher concentrations
in fish, animals and eventually in people. Concentrations of dioxin build
up in the fatty tissue
of the animals, which are then consumed
by people. The evidence bears out since whales, which are high on the food
chain, often have
high levels of dioxin and other chlorinated
chemicals in their bodies. People who consume large amounts of fatty meat,
dairy and fish
probably get the largest doses of dioxin,
but dioxin is also found at lower levels in grains, fruits and vegetables.
Surplus: Terrorized into being consumers
- www.atmo.se/?pageID=4&articleID=382
This movie asks: How come the
privilege of buying goods does not automatically lead to happiness?
The Jury of the International Documentary
Filmfestival in Amsterdam, Nov.2003.... This film about consumerism totally
consumed us.
It used the language of music video,
propaganda and commercial advertising as a response to the forces of globalisation.
It fights fire with fire.
The questions it raises are ultimately
more important than any answers it might suggest. And we believe audiences
can only profit from
the debate that will ensue. For its
originality, sense of humour, irony, forcefulness and visual virtuosity,
the Silver Wolf Award goes to SURPLUS."

21. Marilyn Manson (clip from Bowling For Columbine) "Keep everyone afraid and they will consume" 330
MOORE: Do you know that the day that
Columbine happened, the United States dropped more bombs on Kosovo than
any other time during that war?
MANSON: I do know that. And I think
that that's really ironic, you know, that nobody said, well, maybe the
president had an influence on this violent behavior. No, because that's
not the way the media wants to take it and spin it and turn it into fear.
But then you're watching television. You're watching the news. You're being
pumped full of fear. There are floods, there's AIDS, there's murder. Cut
to commercial. Buy the Acura, buy the Colgate. If you have bad breath,
they're not going to talk to you. If you have pimples, the girl's not going
to [Audio Deleted] you. And it's just this -- it's a campaign of
fear and consumption. And that's what I think it's all based on, is the
whole idea that, keep everyone afraid and they'll consume.
