Some quotes from Fred Rogers, blended with some contemporary
folk, and kid's releases.
For three decades, "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" has been an oasis of
peace and calm, familiarity
and safety in a kid-unfriendly world. (from http://www.salon.com/people/bc/1999/08/10/rogers/)
1. Mr. Rogers - Won't You Be My Neighbour
2. Michael Yarmush as Arthur -(J.Fallon) Arthur vs. the Piano

"Its important to look for what people are able to do, and once you
find it appreciate it"
While the rest of the world was getting faster and faster, and other good children's programs such as Sesame Street aped the rapid-fire style of commercial television, Rogers stuck to his formula of a soft voice, a constant smile and a cast of embarrassingly low-tech puppets. http://www.sltrib.com/2003/Feb/02282003/opinion/opinion.asp
7. Lui Collins - Things To Do
Leaving Fort Knox - Molly Gamblin Music
www.luicollins.com
"I Loved drama, music, puppetry, and I liked Television, philosophy
and religion.
All could be used in the service of children and family that's when
i knew who I was."
8. Nancy Tucker (Mankita) Why I'm Here in this World
Treasures From the Attic - http://www.nancytucker.info/order_form.htm
" We need desperately, I feel, a noncommercial alternative to what commercialism is trying to do to us. I'm not for censorship, but I'm certainly for self-censorship when it comes to producing or purveying products to America's children. I think that for people who make anything for children, their first thought should be: Would I want my child to see, hear or touch this? And if the answer is no, just don't make it." ("Mister") Fred Rogers
9. Kat Eggleston - On My TV
Second Nature - Waterbug
10. Limelighters - (Stains) Place in the Choir
Until We Get It Right - Cresendo
" As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how
rare
and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something
that no one else
has-or ever will have-something inside that is unique to all
time. It's our job to
encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide
ways of developing its
expression. " - Fred Rogers
11. David Roth - Sister Helen's List
Irreconcilable Similarities - Wind River
``We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.'' - Fred Rogers
12. Chuck Brodsky - Radio
Radio - Red House
Fred's grandfather, made a point of saying how time spent with him was special. "I'm so glad that you've come. You've made this day a special day, just you being yourself is what matters to me"
13. Kate MacLeod - Talkin' About Good News
Constant Emotion - Waterbug
14. Carol Elliott - The People I Meet
The People I Meet - Heartsong Records
16. Fred Rogers - singing
"It's such a good feeling you know, that we're friends"
17. Susan Graham White - Just Like You
Sounding Land - http://www.lionfox.com/sessionsartists/SusanGrahamWhite/
He died Thursday. When I heard the news, it was followed by an old interview,
and one sentence of his struck me:
"How do we make goodness attractive?" When you look at the cover
choices for newspapers we are reminded that tragedy sells, I paused
and thought "How do we make goodness attractive?"
Continuing on Folk Plus without Fred Roger's voice, today on Folk Plus I want to honor, role model behaviour and goodness.

"Dear Neighbors, Thank you for inviting me to be a part of your Who Reads What project. I'm honored to be a part of this project. It seems like a wonderful way to encourage reading in your community, and we're always glad to help librarians. The librarian in my hometown was very much a part of my growing up. Her love of books and reading was contagious, and I know how important librarians can be for children and for adults. As my choice for your booklet, I would offer The Little Prince by Antoine de St. Exupery. One of my favorite quotes is in that book, and it's framed on my office wall: 'What is essential is invisible to the eye.' Sincerely, Fred Rogers

Other quotes:
"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from learning.
But for children play is serious learning.
Play is really the work of childhood." ~ Fred Rogers-(Mr. Rogers)
" All children need to see that the adults in their lives can feel angry
and still not hurt themselves or anyone else."
``You know, you don't have to look like everybody else to be
acceptable and to feel acceptable.''
"the whole wide world seems so very very wrong, what do you do
stop when you've planned a thing that's wrong, do something else instead."
i can stop when i want to, when i wish scary to feel out of control
That's probably one reason why so many young children are attracted to stories about heroes and villains. Those figures may often represent a "good" inside force which can win out over a "bad" inside force. Young children, with their shaky controls, cannot always be sure what the outcome of the good-bad struggle inside them will be, and it may reassure them to find the "good guy" winning time and time again.
Offering as many creative and constructive outlets as possible is an
important way parents can help their children learn to cope with anger.
Of course, the ways we ourselves express our anger will influence our children
the most. That, as well as our reactions to depictions of anger in stories
or television.
Anger is a difficult feeling for most people - painful to feel and
hard to express. It can help us and our children to remind ourselves that
having angry feelings is a part of being human, whether we like it or not.
It's simply a fact that lovable people get angry sometimes. We can't expect
our children never to be angry, any more than we can ask that of ourselves,
but we can help them find healthy ways for them to deal with the mad that
they feel... and help them know the good feeling that comes with self-control.
