Fund Drive/Jeff Radio in exile

Yesterday we had to broadcast WJFF from the tower in Liberty, as the Jeffersonville Hotel burned to the ground taking our fiber optic cable lines with it. We crawled through a vent and then opened the door which had become jammed. We brought equipment there and began broadcasting about 12:15 right from the tower. I ran Folk Plus through the scheduled time for Jambalaya, until about 2:30 taking pledges at the station's phone number. Workers there called the tower with updates on the pledges and we continued as "usual" with the fund drive. It was a little cold, but fun.

People heard where we were and brought food, and pledge money!  We were trying to make an $18,000 goal of finishing the mortgage on the station. We got a third of the way there! Unique day. People came up the hill with their families to speak on the radio and leave money. Some said they had to see it to beleive it.

People drove in to talk about good times they had over the years at the hotel too. This hotel had an  award winning bar, from 1930's. I didn't know bard won awards, but evidently this one did. Sad.

For those of you who couldn't belive it and couldn't drive up to the tower on Elk Point Road, we took digital pictures of yesterday and posted them at http://www.wjffradio.org/tower   You can see how much fun we had.

We Hydro-powered Public Radio serving the Mid-Hudson Region, North East Pennsylvania, and the Upper Delaware Valley. (Unless fires knock out out lines and we don't reach anywhere) Hydro power is no help when you still need to connect fiber optics to your tower!

Folk Plus airs Saturdays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on WJFF following NPR's Car Talk.

We got this e mail from a listener:

"Would you believe that exactly 25 years ago TODAY the stallwart holdout staf fmembers at WBAI ensconsed themselves in the transmitter room in the top floor of the Empire State Bldg. ala King Kong and broadcast live there for the next two days until the management cut the phone lines??  They'll probably be doing their famous Peter Bochan anniversary 2/11/77 soundmix tomorrow night commemorating that legendary time (the "first" WBAI strike/lockout - which still casts deep shadows over what is just beginning to resolve itself these days at BAI) So I will pledge an additional $25 in honor of King Kong!"   Annonymous
